Weeks 17-30 August 2015

Obviously, I have forgotten to write a blog post last week 😦

I remembered on Sunday, and I thought I would do it then. So it’s Wednesday and I obviously took my time again, so I may as well do the two together 🙂

My last week was extremely busy and emotional, and no wonder I forgot about blogging. I had two visits to the dentist and no visit to Art Store…. And then I met a friend whom I haven’t seen in eight years and that triggered lots of not so nice memories and loads of emotions I needed to work through. But I am happy to report that all is fine and, with a little help of my art making I feel wonderful again.

So, let me give you photos from last two weeks. The first is this one which I did in my small journal. I used some oil based printing paint (white you see on the borders). I was very excited about that because I wanted so much to use white color for stamping and wanted it to be real paint and not ink pad. It kind of works, but it takes ages to dry (3-4 days) which is not acceptable amount of time if you are stamping into your art journal… Seriously…

Then I did some stamp carving. I am very excited about the result:

This was done on the front cover of my new big journal with beautiful Fabriano hot pressed watercolour paper. Yum! I started colouring it, then it did not really work, so I keep playing and layering and this is how it ended:

After lots of layers, I stamped again on top, but this time with the white acrylic paint mixed with some retardant medium. It serves to slow down the drying of acrylic paint, so that you can keep stamping repeatedly for some  15-20 minutes. Just what I needed. Good bye oil paint! Perfect!

The next thing I did was a rather quick painting of Minerva (goddess of wisdom) for Life Book 2015 class. I felt really inspired to do it, so it was happy easy and quick painting:

After that, I did two pieces for Art Journal Summer School:

This one with collage birds, which was not really exciting, you can see… I simply do not like doing birds…

And this one which was really cute and I love it and I will probably do more. It’s quickly done, but somehow looks really funny. I decided to add a little story, somehow felt that it must be their story 🙂

And then, as I said, I met that friend of mine and was filled with emotions to bursting so the following two pages were therapeutic and are extremely precious to me:

Yes, there is a spelling mistake. Like many other people, I suddenly lose the skill of spelling correctly when writing slowly… 🙂

This one is my most loved page in my journal until now…

Again, I am amazed at how art making helps with de-stressing and putting things in perspective. I have no idea what happens in the process, but it works. Just listening to your intuition and letting go, without aim and without a precise idea of what you want to create. It’s meditative and it’s healing and it’s so rewarding… Long live art journaling! 🙂

Week 27 July – 2 August 2015

This week I decided that it’s time to finish two mandalas which I started some time ago. Here they are:

2015-08-05 11.31.17 1 2015-08-05 11.32.10 1

Then, it was quite a stressful week and I had to do some things that I really did not want to do, which left me quite exhausted and disturbed. I finished them and all is fine again and I am happy that I dealt with them. 🙂 So, i had to do some journaling to help me deal with those. Actually, I do not know if it helps really, but at least I do discharge some of the anxiety caused by thinking about things I do not want to do… In any case, no matter what is the underlying principle, it makes me feel better. Here is the journal page done in distress last week:

Finally, there was a bonus lesson in Lifebook 2015 this week, which means a short video and easy task. This time it was making your hamsa hand. I guess it just kind of rounded up this stressful week for me, as it is supposed to be a protection symbol. Here it is:

Week 20-26 July 2015

I’ve had quite a busy week, artwise. Before I went on holiday I bought some alcohol inks to play with. I did not take them with me to holiday, because I had other plans. So I was so excited when I came back and saw them waiting for me at my desk. There was a little problem though: paper. In order to flow properly, they need glossy, non-absorbent surface, and of course, I did not have any. Why would I have glossy paper, when I use watercolor and acrylic?! So… I opened my journal and covered a page with gel medium… And it worked! I made these two:

It was quite ok, but the ink would not really flow, I had to blow it around, so no control whatsoever. Of course, I had to do something, and something meant going to the art shop for something glossy :). All I could find was glossy cardstock, so I bought several sheets, which were kind of A5 format. I wanted bigger, but I was not that lucky.

This is the next one I did:

So, the difference is obviously quite remarkable. It is flowing, very much flowing… Beautiful 🙂 No need to blow…

I was very happy with all that, so I recorded a video;

Next I finished a piece for Art Journal Summer School which was about creating animals from wash tape:

And then a lesson for Life Book 2015, which was about intuitive layering:

And to end with, I made another entry into my art journal about elephants and whales being killed by people… It’s what the writing is about which is probable not possible to read… I was triggered by the elephant stencil I received from ClarityStamp and a post about whales being killed in some traditional event on Faroe Islands. Anyway… It turned out nice and I really love it. Plus it looks quite cool on my new black desk 😉

Week 13-19 July 2015

This was one hell of a week. At least temperature wise. I was in Croatia at the seaside and it was not pleasant. Apart from swimming and soaking in the sea, everything else was just too much effort. Nights were the worst: trying to sleep and not being able to because sheets are too hot and the air does not move. Consequently, not much art was done. Just two pieces from Art Journal Summer School:

2015-07-16 08.01.21

A collage describing a day of my holiday, actually the travel day. I met a friend in Split and we went to a cake place to have coffee (I had water, of course). I collected some promotional cards there and used them for my collage. Not really my piece of cake to document my life in such a way, but it was easy enough to do in that heat..

2015-07-16 08.02.30

And this is another lesson. It was about using stencils and layering with stencils. I made some notes about my holiday the heat and mosquitos. 🙂

2015-07-16 07.59.49

And finally, a lesson from Life Book 2015. This was so much fun to do. The face started as a collage from a magazine and I painted over it to make it my own. I really enjoyed that one. I started it before going on holiday and it was almost done, just some final touches were missing, so  I just finished it there.

On Saturday we headed back and this was what my car thermometer measured somewhere on Croatian highway:

Week 4-10 May 2015

Oh, this was quite a sad week, because my computer got broken… I was in the middle of preparing a new video when it happened. So, no video. Also not to much art. I finished week 19 in Life Book 2015:

Week 19 LB

I am having a major problem with photos too, because I need to send them by email to myself and then upload them over my work computer. I have ordered a new hard drive for my Mac, but it will take time to arrive and also more time to get everything installed, so I will have to manage like this. And this is not fun 😦

Enough complaining!

I’ve been carving stamps this weekend, and it extended to this week too, of course, I am hooked. I carved them before too, but now I got so many ideas for new ones… It will stop too, because I will run out of rubber and it is not easy to find here, I have to order it from the UK, which means shipping costs, which altogether with buying this HD for my computer is not much fun… But then, let’s hope it will all be good and in 2-3 weeks I will have a brand new super fast computer with so much space for my videos and paintings  🙂

So, no more photos for today. I will photograph the stamps I made and post them next week. I prepared some journal pages, as I was trying  my newly carved stamps on them. So looking forward to enriching them with some faces 🙂

Week 27 April – 3 May 2015

I’ve had quite an arty week, which often happens when I work from home and do not have to waste time traveling to the office… I put a video of my new art journal creation process on YouTube, you can view it here:

Probably it is not easy to follow the process on the video. That is why I plan to put instructions on my blog next time when I make another journal. Maybe someone will find it useful.

Then, as you could see from the last post, if you read it, I decorated the front page of the journal, which I also recorded on the video and it can be watched here:

And then, nothing could stop me from recording another video, this time of the inside of the front cover:

I thought it’s a good idea to document the whole journaling process on this new journal, so I will be recording page by page as I go. It may be interesting to see in the end, who knows.

Last week I also finally did one of the Life Book 2015 lessons, which was Week 17. It was very challenging, but I am very pleased with the result:

IMG_0594

I am sorry now that I did not take photos of work in progress, because they would be really worth seeing. It started as a rather Neanderthal looking, with eyes high in her forehead, but I thought, ok, so what, she will just be who she is. Then, I just could not do it, so I took titanium buff acrylic pain and painted over her whole face. Then I started again. I used clear gesso over the acrylic and so I could draw on top of it. The materials here are charcoal and inktense blocks with some white acrylic, so obviously it would not be possible to use them over acrylic. This girl looked very angry to start with. I guess she was really pissed because I took me so long to make her. At the end she softened, probably happy to be, just as I am 🙂 And yes, her mouth was painted over with white acrylic at some point, and then gessoed over and then done again. Clear gesso became my best friend, I did not know it was so useful and so nice to draw on 🙂

And finally for the last week, another entry in my new journal:

IMG_0606The background done with distress ink and distress stains and a new stencil. Then a layer of clear gesso, and then the face over it done with charcoal, inktense blocks and a bit of white acrylic. I left it pretty sketchy. I was a quick art journal page after all. Of course, I filmed it and will post the video this or next week 🙂 And here are some details:

Week 23-29 March 2015

This week I really did not do much art, until the weekend. I wanted to continue with faces, but did not have time all week. Just on Friday i started face No. 4, the one with short hair, but I still haven’t finished it. Parallel to that I did one little piece, which I will call face No. 5, which I quite like:

IMG_0490

I bought last week a block of Fabriano hot pressed paper to try, and I myst say I love it, It is smooth and beautiful to draw on and does not warp at all. It is little 5″x7″ or 12.5x18cm, but it makes it easy and fast to finish, so I guess I will switch to this for my faces, at least for the time being. I also bought some border punch (used for the border on the picture) and some paper flowers, obviously used for hear, and some napkins, which I covered by ink gold in the background, so you cannot see them 🙂 and some washi tape with roses – those you can see there in the bottom…

Another piece I did yesterday is for Life Book 2015, lesson by Jane Davenport about inner and outer world:

IMG_0492

My lady first looked as a body builder with huge upper arm, so I had to stick down some more napkins to trim it down a bit, that is why it lost some of the roundness. Ah, well… I did not see it before I finished the whole thing, but her arm was kind of wider than her waist. LOL! Anyway, this was pretty easy to do once I drew that body. I am quite pleased with it.

At the same time, I was working on my face No. 4, but I haven’t managed to finish it for today. I will post it next week…
